Artificial intelligence-driven transformation in the management of atypia of undetermined significance (AUS) thyroid nodules
AI tools could help doctors reclassify confusing thyroid biopsies more confidently, reducing unnecessary repeat procedures for millions of patients yearly.
This narrative review examines multi-modal AI integration for reclassifying atypia of undetermined significance (AUS/Bethesda III/IV) thyroid nodules, which represent 15-30% of all thyroid cytology and frequently lead to unnecessary repeat biopsy or surgery. The review covers AI pathways incorporating ultrasound features, cytopathological data, and molecular markers, offering a framework for clinical implementation to reduce diagnostic uncertainty.
